Every six months, Shopify rolls out a new Edition encapsulating fresh updates, refined features, and performance improvements for merchants and developers alike. If Editions 25 was "The Boring Edition" - a quiet, foundational release - Spring '26 is its polar opposite. With 150+ updates spanning agentic commerce, AI-powered operations, and a rebuilt point-of-sale experience, this is one of the most ambitious Editions Shopify has ever shipped.

In this post, we break down the key changes introduced in Shopify Editions Spring '26 and what they mean for your store.

Agentic commerce takes center stage

The headline story of this Edition is Shopify's full embrace of agentic shopping. Powered by the new Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), businesses can build agentic shopping experiences from discovery through checkout using Catalog, Cart, and Checkout MCPs. Customers can already purchase directly inside Microsoft Copilot, with Meta ads support coming soon, paying with Shop Pay without ever leaving the chat window.

The new Catalog API lets any business, Shopify or not, sync product data so it's standardized, enriched, and ready for AI channels, including image-based search and real-time product lookups for up to 50 products in a single request.

"Shopping in Copilot, and soon Meta ads, is powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol; customers can purchase directly in chat and pay with Shop Pay."

Sidekick becomes a true operator, not just an assistant

Sidekick has moved well beyond answering questions. It now works directly inside third-party apps, starting with Judge.me, Klaviyo, Loop, and Smile, and can take action on merchants' behalf. New capabilities include generating and editing entire apps with version history, creating customer records from plain-language descriptions, building Shopify Flow automations, and even running on Apple Watch for on-the-go store insights.

"Sidekick keeps working in the background, even when you start a new task, run multiple chats, or close the window."

Smarter online stores and storefront search

Shopify Inbox now includes an AI sales associate that recommends products based on shopper history, and storefront search has been overhauled to return relevant results even with typos or unusual phrasing. Merchants can also stress-test their store with SimGym, which uses AI-simulated shoppers to surface UX improvements, then roll out changes safely using Rollouts, Shopify's new scheduling and A/B testing tool for themes, checkout, and customer accounts.

POS v11: retail's fastest-ever checkout

On the retail side, the rebuilt Shopify POS (v11) promises to save over a minute per transaction on new customers, product entry, and checkout, with a cart that's always present so staff can stay focused on the customer. It's joined by scannable QR discounts, multi-entity selling across retail locations, cash drawer controls with full audit trails, and support for the new Verifone Victa Mobile handheld terminal.

Marketing gets an autopilot

Campaign Autopilot is the marketing headline: AI-powered campaigns that learn and optimize across channels within merchant-set guardrails. Shop Campaigns now runs across ChatGPT, Pinterest, and Microsoft Monetize alongside existing channels, while Shopify Messaging adds WhatsApp marketing and SMS automations, plus smarter send-time prioritization to boost conversion.

Run your store from anywhere, including inside an AI chat

Operations updates lean hard into the "AI-first" theme. Merchants can now spin up a store from a plain-language description using vibe-coding partners like Manus, Replit, V0, or Lovable, and manage an existing store, add products, or process orders directly inside Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity. Analytics also gets a major glow-up, with new visualizations (scatter plots, bubble charts, sunbursts), daily AI-generated insights, and annotated charts explaining why a metric changed.

"Understand your numbers, so you can take action, with daily insights and more context on your store in analytics."

The Shop app becomes an AI shopping companion

Shop's search is now built around conversational discovery, with recommendations shaped by a shopper's tastes and history. A new Shop skill lets shoppers using AI agents like OpenClaw and Hermes discover products and approve purchases directly through Shop, while Shop Minis now surface across the home feed, navigation, and product pages for more discovery touchpoints.

Payments expand beyond Shopify and beyond cards

Shop Pay is now available to any brand on any platform, even those not using Shopify's online store, unlocking access to 250M+ shoppers with simplified onboarding. Payment options keep expanding too: USDC crypto payments (with automatic cashback and cross-chain bridging), more local payment methods globally, and a redesigned, higher-converting checkout with a tighter mobile layout.

Built for developers, powered by AI

Developers get their own agentic upgrade with commerce skills for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and other AI tools, enabling store, app, and theme management straight from an AI coding assistant. Add to that safer CI/CD app deployments, a simplified Metafields/Metaobjects GraphQL API, and no-backend-required lightweight apps, and this is shaping up to be Shopify's most developer-forward release yet.

Where this leaves merchants

Where Editions 25 was about quietly refining the fundamentals, Spring '26 is Shopify's boldest statement yet that commerce is becoming agentic. From checkout inside ChatGPT to running your entire store from a chat window, Shopify is betting heavily that AI agents, not just AI assistants, will be how merchants operate and how customers shop. Whether you're rebuilding your retail floor with POS v11 or plugging into the Universal Commerce Protocol for the first time, Spring '26 gives merchants and developers a genuinely new set of tools to build with.

As always, not every update will be relevant to every store; but with 150+ changes across ten categories, there's something here for practically every merchant to explore.
